Strong Earthquake Hits Indonesia’s East Java
(MENAFN) A powerful 6.0 magnitude earthquake shook Indonesia’s East Java Province on Tuesday, the US Geological Survey reported. The tremor struck at a depth of 13.9 kilometers (8.6 miles) beneath the surface at 1649 GMT, originating just 32 kilometers (19.8 miles) from Kalianget in Sumenep Regency.
Despite the strength of the quake, authorities have not yet reported any damage or casualties as of the time of publishing. The region remains on high alert given its history of seismic activity.
Indonesia sits along the volatile Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a hotspot for frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The archipelago is home to more than 120 active volcanoes, making it one of the world’s most seismically active zones. This latest earthquake adds to the ongoing risk faced by millions of residents in the area.
